1st Round - 15th June vs Medstead at Basingstoke, Match Won, report by Tom Stroud.
In the Guy Jewel cup 1st round Ropley took on
Medstead and upon winning the toss elected to bat. On the main pitch at
Mays Bounty and with the wonders of the wicket and the outfield Ropley
were hopeful of posting an unbeatable target against our neighbouring
underdogs. However things did not go according to plan with Master
Blaster Alistair Cotton departing in the first over, with the ball
coming on a little quicker off the wicket than one might expect. That
bought Tom Stroud to the crease, who looking forward to an opportunity
to get some time at the crease was hopeful of putting on a mass of runs
with Robert Smith. However after playing some nice glances and steady
shots Robert Smith (12) succumbed to the temptation of slow spinner Legg
and hauled out to mid-on. Chris Graham (10) came in at 4 and fell in a
similar fashion with the score at circa 65. Olly Williams (5) came in
and struggled to work the ball around then missed a straight one (in an
attempt to nurdle). This brought Sutton to the crease, who had been
frustratingly sat on the side line wanting to come out and give it a
slap. Stroud and Sutton set about increasing the run rate and injected a
few well needed lusty-blows before Sutton (9) was caught. That brought
Edd Stennett to the crease who, as Olly had done, struggled to find the
gaps, Stroud had batted steadily with some watchful scoring had amassed
49 before he missed an attempted late cut to see the stumps tumble. With
3 overs to go Toby Williams (2) came in and showed a couple of
big-swishes but failed to make any connection and was soon bowled. Mark
Munday then joined Stennett and the pair managed to scramble a few ones
and twos in the final 2 overs. Ropley ended on 121 for 7.
The
score seemed to be a reasonable and defendable score with a team full of
bowling options, however Ropley knew that they should have scored more –
Medstead knew this too.
Upbeat we took to the field and opened
up with Robert Smith and Tom Stennett, but the Medstead openers got off
to a flyer despite good bowling they hit through the line and drove
strongly finding the gaps with ease. Smith dropped a fairly easy return
catch from his bowling (the better of the openers too !) this drop was
punished with vengeance. Munday came on to replace Tom Stennett and
perplexed the batsmen somewhat but they had their eye-in and managed to
continue to score at a speedy rate – the introduction of Sutton made no
improvement. After just 12 overs the openers had breezed the score along
to 90 and looked to be cruising – needing just 5 an over for the last 8
overs. However Stroud was then introduced to the attack (over 13) and
with his usual mixture (the odd “not so good” ball but the odd
“stonker”) managed to claim the wickets of both the openers within his
first 2 overs – this was to completely change the game. As the light
faded skipper Graham returned to the quicker opening bowlers (youngsters
Stennett and Smith) they bowled with experience beyond there years and
were not at all fazed by the pressure of the situation. Medstead
struggled to get the remaining runs, the run rate constantly rising,
wickets fell and they left it too late to “throw the bat” and as a
result fell 7 runs short. (114 for 4)
