Igglesden Cup 2009

Having been knocked out of the Tichborne Trophy in the second round we are now in the Igglesden Cup which is effectively the plate competition for the Tichborne Trophy.

Igglesden Cup Semi Final vs Willow Tree at Home 20/07/09. Match Lost, report by Martin Peters

Ropley suffered a narrow 8 run defeat at the hands of division 1 high flyers Willow, ultimately paying for a slow start with the bat to fall 8 runs short.

After winning the toss the Willow openers wasted no time in cutting loose as Viljoen (29) & Jenner (25) smashed the first 5 overs for 47 runs. Change bowlers Tom Stroud & Les Spevock applied the brakes & took crucial wickets too, the score quickly slipping to 67-3 off 9 overs. The Ropley youngsters excelled in the field, particularly Toby Barnett who pulled off 2 fine catches, including an amazing running/diving effort, then Marco Teixeira held on to a stunner of his own as the Willow innings disintegrated under the intense pressure. Stroud 3-22 & Spevock 4-22 recorded excellent figures, & tight bowling at the end by Teixeira (1-25) & Martin Peters (1-3 off 2) ensured that the target was just 95 for victory.

The unusual sight of both the opening bowlers being off-spinners seemed to cause early confusion, & as a result the scoring rate was very slow, after 7 overs the score stood at just 11-2. Opening bowlers Viljoen & Duval finished their spells with the very economical figures of 1-9 off 5 overs. This meant that at 16-3 off 9, 79 runs were required from the final 10 overs. A partnership of 50 between Tom Stennett (14) & Peters provided hope, one over was dispatched for 18 as the required rate dropped to 28 off the last 4 overs. However, the loss of 3 senior wickets in 2 overs for the addition of just 1 run proved critical, Peters departed for 43 including 3 6s, & he was quickly joined by both Teixeira & Stroud who perished looking for quick runs. 24 off the last 2 overs & 15 off the final one proved too much for youngsters Ed Stennett & John Purchese who gave it their best but came up 8 runs short.

Igglesden Quarter Final on Monday 6th July - HOME v Easton & Martyr Worthy. Match Won.

Easton failed to show up for this game and the umpires awarded the match to Ropley. Five minutes later the heavens opened and flooded the square. Result!

1st game - Monday 22nd June, away v Millers - Match Won, report by Martin Peters

Ropley enjoyed a comfortable 9 wicket victory against an under strength Millers on Monday thanks to an unbeaten 52 from Marco Teixeira coupled with disciplined bowling from 2 evergreen seamers.

Millers chose to bat first & made good early progress thanks to Waters 23, as they reached 36 inside the first 6 overs. Les Spevock, on his midweek debut, extracted considerable movement from the helpful wicket as he clean bowled two batsmen on his way to 2-13 from his 5 overs. The ageless John Happel joined in from the other end, bowling an excellent line & length to record 3-10 from 5, as the innings collapsed to just 83-8 in the full 18 overs. Sam Graham & John Sutton each chipped in with a late wicket.

In reply Ropley got off to a flier with openers Marco Teixeira & Toby Barnett putting on 68 runs in the first 10 overs, the running between the wickets being a good example to all as they made full use of the large outfield by running 4 3s & 2 4s. Once Barnett was removed, Jack Otway played freely in hitting a brisk 15 not out to see them home in just 11.3 overs. Teixeiras 52 included 7 well timed 4s.
